The number three appears frequently: three quarts of barley (6:6); three angels (8:13); three plagues of fire, smoke, and sulfur (9:18); three unclean spirits (16:13); the great city split into three parts (16:19); three gates each to the east, north, south, and west (21:13). Series of three refer to the Deity with the triple shout of the living creatures saying “Holy, holy, holy” (4:8); and a description of God’s power that was, is, and is to come (4:8; see 1:4, 8).
